University Park, Pa. – The Penn State Military Appreciation Events Committee presents Let’s Talk About Mental Health sponsored by Regeneration on November 11, 2020 at 7 p.m. via Zoom.  This free event will be led by Dr. Daniel F. Perkins, Penn State Professor, Principal Scientist, and Founder of the Clearinghouse for Military Family Readiness at Penn State.  The event will discuss the effects of adverse childhood experiences (ACES) and combat exposure on Veterans’ mental well-being.

Dr. Perkins is focused on fostering the well-being of military Service members, veterans, and their families through the Clearinghouse.  He facilitates the translation of science into action by providing comprehensive, science-based programs and technical assistance to professionals working with military and veterans’ families.  Moreover, he led a large-scale longitudinal study of post-911 transitioning veterans, The Veteran Metrics Initiative.  This study is leading the effort to distill programs for veterans into their common components and examine the link between components and veteran well-being throughout the transition process from military to civilian life.

Dr. Perkins believes it is important to provide opportunities and support to Veterans as they transition and post military service.  With regards to Veterans’ mental well-being, he stated the many people assume that military experience is the primary culprit when a Veteran is having mental well-being challenges.  Dr. Perkins stated he wants to highlight two key points during this event.  The first is that “most veterans are doing extremely well” with their transition and mental well-being.  The second point is that “if vets are struggling, there could be multiple reasons for that, more than their military experience”.  You can register for the event here to receive the Zoom link and event reminders.
